Muscoy Sans was based on Muscoy’s street grid including the boundary
of where county & city meet. These intersections were used because they
link the residents to one another. The letter “M,” for Muscoy was designed
first, & the rest of the typeface was designed to match.

This typeface acts as the foundation for the branding program that was developed for the community.

In order to address the issue of insufficient street lighting,
the environmental graphic, Shed Light on Muscoy, was created.
The environmental graphic was created using white fence weave &
white reflective vinyl that was woven through a chain–link fence.
Chain–link fences are found throughout Muscoy & in similar
communities that face the same social issues. Fence weave is
used for privacy & deterrence of crime.

A video drive that begins at the border between Muscoy & San Bernardino City that then heads in oppositie directions. The video of each community is displayed simultaneously side by side as information appears within the video that compares the economic development between the two communities.

R3flect.com is a website for visitors to interact with and access resources. It is designed not only as a place for the public to gather and discuss important issues but also as a tool to help them take action. Artists in the community would also be allowed to share artwork. R3flect.com would also serve as a place to organize volunteers in future projects within the comminty. Individuals outside the community would also be able to contribute and lend advice.

R3CYCLE is a series of info–graphic posters that discuss the benefits of recycling. Recycling has the potential to improve the waste management issues facing Muscoy. They showed what kind of resources recycling specific amounts of different materials could purchase. For example, recycling 20 aluminum cans per house hold in Muscoy could purchase one solar–powered streetlamp.

A large scaled garden bed made from wood that is in the same shape of the Muscoy Sans “M.” The garden bed contains organic fruit & vegetable seeds. Once the seeds are sprouted, the plants would be given to Muscoy residents in a smaller individual “M” shaped planter. Residents could begin their own garden & could potentially move towards becoming an agricultural & self–sustainable community once more.

In order to help empower the youth of Muscoy, I worked with third–grade
students at Muscoy Elementary. I started by giving students lessons in the
fundamentals of graphic design. Our final project asked the students,
“What does Muscoy mean to you?” Each student was given a blank
T–shirt & fabric markers to design a visual representation of how they
view their community.
